700 Alice Springs households beat water price rise with smart actions - 26 November 2012

Around 700 households in Alice Springs will be better off financially despite the recent 40 per cent price hike for water says Alice Water Smart.

The smart households are those who have undertaken a Water Efficiency Consultation and are using less water through changes to their water use behaviour and other actions.

Liz Locksley, Project Manager for Alice Water Smart Homes and Business says the water saving project has completed more than 700 home Water Efficiency Consultations, with water savings opportunities identified in all homes.

“Water savings of around 44% per household are typical, with some higher users saving even more. That’s a bigger saving than the recent price rise.”

“We’re helping people work out where they are using water and how to reduce it - without impacting on their lifestyle.”

“It’s often as easy as making three simple changes, and that can offset the higher water prices. For example, if you water your plants with just the right amount of water they need to be healthy, you fix your leaks and also install water efficient appliances such as taps showerheads and washing machines – these actions will all add up to large savings.”

“We teach people to how to check for leaks and encourage them to get to know their irrigation timer.  If they use a lot of water in the garden we’ll organise for a professional gardener to come out for extra water saving advice. They may even be eligible for $800 of irrigation vouchers.”

“There’s up to $2,700 of Waterwise rebates for retrofit products too.”

Examples of typical water savings after a Water Efficiency Consultation:

Alice Springs family living in a freestanding house with annual high water use of 1000 kL/year:

  • A 40% price increase takes water use costs from $1,340 to $1,870 a year ($530 extra)
  • A 44% water reduction after a Water Efficiency Consultation will save $823

Household with average Alice Springs water use of 530 kL/year

  • A 40% price increase takes water use costs from $710 to $991 a year ($281 extra)
  • A 44% water reduction after a Water Efficiency Consultation will save $436
